The field of game design is no different.

Over the last decade or so there has been one debate in the board game community that stands out among all others — the debate between European and American style board games.
Today, I am going to present my thoughts on this debate.

There are about three main ways that this is done.
Firstly, some games simply have an amount of time or amount of turns that can pass until the game is over.
Secondly, games can have a particular goal, such as reaching the other side of the board, that ends the game.
Finally, the third method is to have the game end when one player reaches a certain number of victory points VPs.
Speaking of VPs, they are an important part of the last major element of Eurogames — the Can I please get a Point Salad for the table?
Through a similar instinct as the decision not to include player elimination, many Eurogames are designed so that every player feels that they have a chance to win until the very last turn.

I haven't done academic research or anything, but having played the games for years and looking into game mechanics of various games out there, I have some thoughts.
This conclusion is also backed by my own gaming collection.
I've looked at it and realized that most of my games are from 2010 forward.
I've gotten five times more games in my collection that are from 2010, than the year before.
I've got twice as many games from 2011, than 2010.
And this has remained steady since.

And looking at all that, I can make a pretty good guess.
I believe that it's because American and Euro board game cultures started merging into one starting 2010.
And in the last two years, you can also see modern Asian board games having a bigger impact on board games in the West too.
So it's not about Ameritrash vs Euros.
The see more games out there today Eurogames vs ameritrash the best parts of these different boardgame cultures and make them one.
Robinson Crusoe is one of the very best games designed in the last few years and it's a mix of exciting cooperative survival ameritrash game and eurogame engine building.

And there are so many more examples.
Sure there are games that are more similar to european school of games than american, or games that are more similar to asian style board games like the recently released wonderful Tragedy Looper.
But most successful games are not eurogames anymore, or are not ameritrash games anymore.
They are productions of modern international boardgaming culture and should be taken as such.
Where games are designed in one country, produced and published in another and become a success in its own right in third.
There is no need to reinvent the word ameritrash into 'amerithrash' either.
These terms make no real difference anymore.
There's a reason games are not categorized this way in stores - the end gamer can tell no real difference either and the whole debate exists solely between us boardgame elitists.
Anyways, just my two cents on the topic.
I don't think it's pointless, but I agree that the increasingly blurred lines between the two descriptions make it a different sort of conversation.
For every example you can give of read article hybrid game I can give an example of one that's not.
I mean, look at some of the truly biggest releases that have come out this season.
Eldritch Horror: full ameritrash; Dead of Winter: full ameritrash; Five Tribes: full euro.
I do agree that it seems more and more hybrids are coming out.
Euro designers are seeing that theme has value in many ways, and western designers see that random things happening to you and self-balancing player conflict don't always lead to the most rewarding experiences.

I can't get into either of the Robinson Crusoe or Eclipse precisely because of it's hybridyness.
Their ok and i'd sit down and play them but to my euro friends they're like the euro engine is too shallow and to me i'm like there is far to much euro in this for me to get into it.
They have a niche for the people who don't really care what they play and the people who like thematic euros because really that's what they feel like Thematic Euros rather then a true hybrid type game.
My favoriate games recently are pure games that play up it's style of game.
Terra Mystica on the Euro Side and things like Dead of Winter on the americany side.
The best games out there today take the best parts of these different boardgame cultures and make them one.
You'd need to define what you mean by best, otherwise it's straight up your opinion and do it again when you say best parts.
So yes, maybe for yourself, but not for everyone.
My favorite games are consistently conflict or thematic games.
I think I only have 2 Euros: Race for the Galaxy and Ad Astra.
The other games I like: Battlestar Galactica, Arkham Horror, Twilight Struggle, Magic the Gathering, Netrunner, etc.
I do think there needs to be a distinction for point-centric versus thematic game styles.
One is heavily about optimization and minimizes or eliminates player interaction.
The other genre of game then is totally about interacting with your opponents and denying their Eurogames vs ameritrash, while advancing yours.

But in the end, as long as you just view them as guidelines that give a lot of information with a single phrase, rather than as a set of strict categories that define tastes or whatever, then they can be quite useful.
We shouldn't limit ourselves to the strict definitions of "Eurogame" or "Ameritrash", just like it's silly when discussing music to limit yourselves to strict definitions of "Dubstep" or "Indie Rock" or "Progressive Viking Death Metal".
But that doesn't mean the labels aren't useful as a way to give someone a general idea of how a game plays.
By saying "the best games out there today take the best part of these.
But there certainly doesn't seem to be any decrease in the number or popularity of euro-games.
While hybrids have a vibrant market, a lot of euro-gamers criticize games like Eclipse and Yedo.
People analyzing the underlying reasons certain game-types are reflected by certain mechanics can only benefit the development of games.
Shrieking about the pointlessness of the debate isn't going to lead anyone to anything better.
The biggest problem is that ameritrash is a shitty pejorative term that can be applied to brilliantly designed games.
It has taken on its own meaning, and everyone knows what is intended by the term.
When in reality ameritrash should apply to I completely disagree.
I know that an Amerithrash game I'm less likely to click here than a Euro.
This is because my gf and I don't enjoy direct confrontation, that's why we don't like Eclipse.
Manhattan Project is a "hybrid" but we don't enjoy it because the Amerithrash aspects direct conflict outweigh the Euro aspects.
